Acheological Heritage

Tejeda is a must for those who wish to discover the rich archaeological heritage of the island. There we can find archaeological remains such as burial caves, engravings, paintings and houses. The Roque Bentayga is a sample of it; It is a natural element of great singularity that was a sacred place for the aborigines, because there they made offerings and worshiped the gods. It is located in Las Cuevas del Rey. Inside you can see room grottos, granaries, engravings, cave paintings and several rock holes that denote the existence of a pre-Hispanic religious center.

Centro de Interpretación Degollada de Becerra

The Degollada Interpretation Center of Becerra is another of the places of interest in Tejeda. It is located on the road between La Cruz de Tejeda and the Llanos de la Pez. It is a viewpoint that offers a spectacular landscape to the walker, but, above all, it is a center dedicated to inform about local ethnography. The Archaeological Park of Bentayga is an ecomuseum built next to the Roque of the same name, whose purpose is to serve as an interpretation center, both the archaeological complex of the Roques (Bentayga, Andén de Tabacalete, Cuevas del Rey and El Roquete) and its surroundings. It offers an extraordinary landscape of the south and west of the island.

The visit to the municipality can not ignore the Parish Church of Nuestra Señora del Socorro. This temple, dating from 1921, is rectangular, and is divided into three naves with large windows that give the church an extraordinary lighting also featuring a beautiful altarpiece that, recently inaugurated, is its most striking element.

One of the recommended visits is to La Cruz de Tejeda, which offers one of the most relaxing views of the island. A large stone cross presides over the entrance to the National Parador, a few meters from which numerous stalls selling typical products of the area will delight visitors

Roque Nublo

Natural wealth

The symbol of Gran Canaria is also found in Tejeda. It is the Roque Nublo, a huge basaltic rock in the form of a monolith over 70 meters high, which arose as a result of volcanic activity during the Pleistocene. To his side, towards the northeast, is another monolithic rock called El Fraile, because of its great resemblance to a monk in prayer. And if what you want is to appreciate the natural beauty of the municipality, it is advisable to make excursions through the pine forests of Inagua and Ojeda, and, further north, that of Los Pechos, which has wonderful views, like almost all of this municipality , geographic center of the Island.

Gastronomy

AlmendrasThe almond is a product of great importance in the cuisine of Tejeda, which has become one of the flagship municipalities in the development of Canarian pastries.

The bienmesabe and the marzipans are good examples of this. Both sweets are made with almonds previously crushed and, in the case of bienmesabe, has become one of the traditional accompaniments to frozen desserts.

In Tejeda it is also possible to taste any traditional Canarian dish, in which the meat of goat and cow turns out to have an exquisite flavor and the broths of potatoes and stews of watercress and jaramagos reach their maximum expression.
